Mobile Concept Phone: size does matter

Cell phone designers have always struggled to bring out a phone which has the smallest possible size and the largest possible screen area! Since, these both are mutually exclusive, it is a tough job. Apple's solution was to get rid of physical buttons. But eventually, many phones ended up in an all screen-clamshell design.

A new concept design by designer James Piatt shows what the future might be like. It's a luring idea and definitely inevitable, simply because of the appeal of having the largest possible screen and the necessity of fitting inside a pocket.

So, here is the phone about which all the talk is about.

Ingenious Gadgets that never took off!

Here is a celebration of 'ingenious gadgets that attempted to solve human difficulty', but failed to do so because of practical difficulties.
1) The route-finder:
It was the invention of the future - a tiny machine complete with its own map that would tell motorists which way to go.

But this was no satnav - after all, the communications satellites that help modern cars locate themselves were still decades away.

Instead, the route-finder for the well-equipped 1920s driver was a wristwatch-style device equipped with minuscule maps.

1920s route-finder at British Library gadget exhibition

Miniature scrolls bearing the directions were loaded onto the watch and revolved as the wearer continued his journey.

The 1920s TomTom never took off - perhaps because there were too few motorists to buy them.

2) Burglar Alarm

The clockwork mechanism on this 1870s burglar alarm was wound up and the upright lever set, before the device was placed at the foot of a door and a spike pushed into the floor. If an intruder tried to enter, the lever would be pushed down and set off the surprisingly loud and effective bell.

3) Pistol Purse

Highwaymen were a real danger in the late 19th century and this cunning design might just have saved everything for you including your honor, property and even life. A small was concealed in a secret compartment of this seemingly ordianry ladies' purse. The problem was that the barrel could hold only one bullet - so there was no room for missing the shot.

4)ELECTRO MASSAGER

During the 1930s, body massage was not seen as a luxury or part of being pampered but was, correctly, regarded as important for maintaining healthy skin and good circulation. However this functional-looking dynamo massager appears neither pleasurable nor safety conscious, as it ended up giving tiny electric shocks to the user.

5)Toe Socks

These pre-shrunk 'To Sox' were designed to act as toe protectors. Produced during World War II, it was claimed that they could reduce hosiery costs by up to 80 per cent. They were designed to be worn over the big toes, to protect socks from wear.

6) Envelope Sealer

This invention, by Reynolds of Chicago, was a byword for gravitas and efficiency. When the lever is cranked, a roller forces an open envelope to undergo a dampening process, before a second roller presses it closed.

7) Light Specs

Invented in the U.S. in the 1930s, these specs were adorned with two small, battery-powered lights, with a long wire trailing beneath. The experience was marred only by the likelihood of electrocution when it rained.

8) Eye massager

Apparently it was not enough to have

a gadget for massaging the body.
By the 1920s, it was also deemed necessary to devise a mechanism
to massage the eyeballs.
This convoluted gadget was
pressed to the face.
The user would then operate the small lever to compress the rubber bellows which would in turn emit cool puffs of air directly onto the eyeballs.

Scope: The kids camera

Scope! A camera for kids!!

Scope1.jpgThe Scope camera has a fresh look and a singular purpose, he says:

I wanted to emphasize the importance of looking and framing. In my design there is no screen ... It places the photographer in the spotlight: while looking through the camera, the world looks at you. You cannot hide behind the camera.

I was triggered in particular by the question posed as part of the wish: "What are creative ways to make the biggest impact in a way that others could use in future?" I believe that photography from within, made by the people/children themselves, can make a powerful impact on not only the outside world, but also on the people themselves.

Top 8 most expensive mobile phones.

Here is a list of the top ten most expensive mobiles. Though, its gonna blow a hole in your pocket and most of us can not afford it, it is worth having at least a look at them.

1. Goldvish “Le million” = $1,000,000 (£540,540)

Goldvish

You've got lots of money in your pocket and you have no idea what to do with them. Here is a phone that help reduce your burden. The Goldvish “Le million” is officially the most expensive mobile phone in the world, according the Guiness Books of Records. The “Le million” in simple words is just priceless featuring a blinding 120 carats worth of VVS-1 grade diamonds, according to designer Emmanuel Gueit. If $1 million is out of your price range. the Geneva-based Goldvish also offer several other diamond-encrusted 18k gold models in your choice of rose, yellow, or white, starting at a much more reasonable $25,600 (£13,837). Anyway, 0wning such a costly phone wouldnt let you use this phone as freely as you use your normal phone for the fear of spoiling it.

2. Vertu Signature Cobra = $310,000 (£167,567)

Vertu Cobra

Vertu is now taking orders for the Signature Cobra, designed by French jeweler Boucheron, but the stocks might have finished with only 8 of them being made! The Cobra will feature one pear-cut diamond, one round white diamond, two emerald eyes and 439 rubies. Vertu will also be offering a “cheaper” version, ruby free, at $115,000 (£62,162).

3. Sony Ericsson Black Diamond = $300,000 (£162,162)

Sony Ericsson Black Diamond

Apparently the Black Diamond will be available in 2007, and this phone is surprisingly not from Ericsson but by a company called VIPN. Initially only 5 unique numered pieces will be available for the unbelievable price of, wait for it… $300,000.

With regards to the specifications, don’t expect anything remarkable for your money. It will have Quad-band with Wi-Fi, an Intel 400Mhz processor running windows mobile 5, and a touch sensitive 2″ screen. It will also include internal memory of 128mb and will come with a 2Gb SD card for external storage, plus a respectable 4 Megapixel camera.

The designer Jaren Goh has used some pretty impressive materials for the build, featuring titane with polycarbonate, mirror-finish cladding and diamonds.

4. Vertu Diamond = $88,000 (£47,567)

Vertu Diamond

The Diamond is Vertu’s premium range of high-end mobile phones. As the name suggests the handsets in the Diamond range are diamond-encrusted handsets made from platinum. Only 200 of the handsets are being produced, the most expensive believed to be worth an estimated £50,000.

5. Motorola V220 Special Edition = £28,000 ($51,800)

Motorola

Austrian designer Peter Aloisson, has taken a standard Motorola, studded it with 1,200 diamonds and added a keyboard inlaid with 18 carat gold. Now that adds upto a £28,000 handset, suitable only for footballers and film stars!

6. Gold Edition Nokia 8800 Phone = $2,700 (£1,459)

Gold Nokia 8800 Mobile Phone

If you have $2,700 to spare, you can now buy the Nokia 8800 in 24K gold. But beware, costly doesnt mean that the phone is going to flood you with features. The features found on the Gold Edition are the standard 8800 features, which are pretty basic. It includes a 0.5 Mega pixel SVGA camera, 64 MB of internal memory, 64 voice polyphonic rigntones, FM Radio, Mp3 Player, video recording and 180 mins talktime. However, the Gold Edition does includes a special edition box and charging dock!

7. Mobiado Professional EM (wood) = $1,900 (£1,027)

Mobiado

The Mobiado Professional EM, is a wood-clad upgrade of their earlier Nokia-based phone that includes a 1.3 megapixel camera, music player, FM radio, Bluetooth, and according to Mobiado it’s the first production phone with Titanium buttons. Only 200 are being made and each one has its limited number engraved on the back. At $1,900 however, you’re still paying an awfully high premium for a fairly basic phone which is just encased in wood!

Source

8. Bang & Olufsen (Samsung) Serene = $1,250 (£675)

Bang and olufsen serene mobile phone

Bang & Olufsen hooked up with Samsung to design the sleek but unconventional Serene. Its not a bad looking phone and it even has a built-in motor to assist you in opening and closing the phone. The phone is in no way practical however, requiring a special screwdriver to access the battery and the SIM card, and its circular keypad will take some getting used to. Also, for some strange reason they have positioned the camera lens on the side of the device, which will make it difficult for you to align yourself at right angles to our objects.

MSI Wind NB U100: Mini-notebook

MSI's Wind NB U100 is one of the first Intel Atom-based mini-notebooks to appear. It gives a clear idea of what the bargain-priced CPU can handle. Other components include 1GB of RAM, an 80GB 2.5-inch hard drive, and Windows XP-, all for $550. The Wind is roughly the size of a super-small ultraportable laptop, like Lenovo's Ideapad U110, but mini-notebooks and ultraportables in no way overlap price and performance..

The Wind manages to get a cool design with a 10-inch, 1024-by-600 resolution display and a keyboard reasonably appropriate for hands to type on. It's also larger (10.23 by 7.08 by 1.24 inches ) than most other mini-notes, and its construction seems rugged (additional bonus is the well-constructed hinges inside the case). The Wind comes with an array of features like three USB ports, a Webcam/mic that camps atop the display, an SD Card slot, and ethernet and VGA-out jacks, like most of the present mini notebooks

The bundled software is pretty misery: a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 and a BurnRecovery App that crafts a recovery CD which is not goona be useful for a device with no optical drive.

The Wind's most notable feature is TurboDrive--a feature that amounts to overclocking at the touch of a button. Essentially, TurboDrive appears to be a power management shortcut that shoves the Atom processor into its (relatively) high-power mode. Battery life is a big dissappointment: The juice lasted for just 2 hours, 24 minutes.

Navigating documents and files is reasonably painless. The single bar at the bottom of the mousepad is cool, which serves as both the left and right mouse click..

There are some solid reasons to consider MSI's Wind. It's small and fairly light (about 2.6 pounds), and it's sturdy enough to take a beating. But other solidly-built mini-notebooks are just gonna surface up, including Lenovo's S10 and the Dell mini Inspiron 910. Its better to weigh your options before you consider buying any of these.

Power Purse for the Eco-conscious lady

The usual charger bags look techy to be actually put in use. Here is a charger type bag which can actually be flaunted. For casual types who tend to carry backpacks, rucksacks, and canvas shoulder bags, there's the sakku Solar Buddy Bag. These bags are made of recycled sun shades. The bags are available in two varieties:
1)a direct version charges your gadgets directly from the electricity generated through the use of its integrated solar cells;
2) the "akku" variety, on the other hand, comes with a rechargeable battery that stores the harnessed solar energy for later use.
The bags cost $275 and $384 respectively..
Power Purse.jpg
The Power Purse is more of a cute handbag for fashion-conscious ladies. From outside it will just look like a black rectangular purse, but it actually houses solar cells to charge your electronic gadgets. Equipped with two batteries which need 2 hours of solar exposure for a full-charge, the bag can juice gadgets via USB connectionusing the solar energy. Most small gadgets including iPods, media players, cell phones, PDAs, and digital cameras are supported. It's now available at Solarjo.com for $300.

Eco friendly water powered clock

Now, you will be thinking that clocks are not a big headache when it comes to changing the battery, but all those who think that their small acts can change the world and the environment, should look at this.

As the name suggest, this small clock is powered by water and a bit of salt. According to the product description, the set of electrodes inside the device could extract energy from the compounds in the water, although no specifics were given. The Bedol eco-friendly water-powered clock will be available on August 15, 2008 in charcoal, blue, green, and orange colors for $16 per unit. So, go and get this cool eco friendly gadget for yourself as well as a gift for your near and dear ones.

Electric Sports Car from Lightning

Wow! This sports car has got the stunning look, is sleek, fast. So that completes everything you want from a sports car, right? Wait, there is more to this cool looking car, its electric. Thats right, this is an all electric sports car that is for sale, looks good and is fast. The car may make you poorer by a quarter of a million, but hey, forget the trouble of refueling your car again and again and avoid the cost of the gas too! So what is the right time to buy it? The younger you are, the better it is your choice, now you will probably save more than the cost of the thing if you drive it forever. Plus you’d pick up some mean chicks in a fancy ride like this.

But the real funda about this car is that it is one of the first car to rely on lithium-titane battery technology which give the car the ability to charge up “in a matter of minutes”. Of course, you need to be connected by a special three phase power charging station. But, if you have the money to buy the car, then what does the cost of such a station matter?

8MP camera phones: Samsung Innov8 & SE C905

A new frontier in the mobile phone wars has been set up as eight megapixel camera phones are going to hit the high street.

Currently the highest megapixel count – the number of dots, measured in millions, that make up an image – sported by a camera phone is five available in most of the leading phone manufacturers like Nokia, SE, Samsung etc.

Samsung will raise the bar by a further three million pixels this evening as it launches its new Innov8 mobile phone, the first eight megapixel phone to reach the UK. The Innov8, which hits shelves on September 1 is offered free on Orange £35 contracts. With face, smile and blink recognition (meaning the photograph will not take if someone is blinking, for example, or unless the person is smiling) as well as the ability to load photos straight to the web, Samsung is taking on even the mid-range digital cameras.

Sony Ericsson, which had released the news earlier of a phone with more than 5MP camera, is due to enter the fray at the end of October with its feature rich 8.1 megapixel C905, the newest entry in its Sony Cybershot phone range, Other handset makers, including Nokia and LG, are expected to follow before long.

Google Android: The G-Phone

The Google android is an open Handset alliance project. It has got the 'signature unlocking' tool.

Features include a built-in compass that allows people orientate maps as they use their phone to find out a restaurant or venue, and a customisable homepage that lets people bookmark their favourite web pages.

The device - which is unlocked by drawing a shape only the owner knows on a nine-square grid - will also include a magnifying tool, to make zooming in on web content easier on a small screen, and a mobile version of the game Pac Man.

Demonstrating the device at a developers' conference in San Francisco, Andy Rubin, who heads up the project at Google, declined to give a release date, but said that the first phones powered by Google's Android operating system will appear in the second half of the year.

Google will not manufacture any phone, but will help develop the software that handset manufacturers will install in their devices. Samsung, HTC, LG Electronics, and Motorola are among the companies that have said they will produce phones that run on Android.

The device on which Mr Rubin gave the demonstration (check out the video) had a touch-sensitive screen, but the software will work equally well on other devices, he said, including those with a so-called 'tracking ball', which has been used by BlackBerry.

Observers of the demonstration said the software feel that a resemblance to Apple's iPhone cant be ruled out, which is also a touchscreen device, and which allows owners to place icons linking to sites such as YouTube on the homepage.

Google s developers would create all kinds of applications that owners of Android phones will be able to download from the internet and install on their devices.

Android is what is known as an 'open-source' operating system, meaning that developers can access the code and create software that works with the device.

Google, which handles about 80 per cent of search queries in the UK, also hopes that by assisting in the production of a phone that will make it easier to use the web, it will tap a new source of revenue - advertisements that appear on web pages viewed on mobile phones.
