Rainbow of iPod Nanos announced

The new Nano design is equipped with a wide screen for watching the HD content available from the iTunes Store. The new Nano designs with a curved design to them, come in a rainbow of colors, and an ever so slight price reduction. In addition, the Nano takes advantage of the accelerometer which changes the screen size, by allowing a “shake shuffle” mode that empowers users to shake it to move to the next song on the shuffle. Also available are new earbuds which have navigation controls right on the bud cord and a microphone for the built in memo recording feature (sold separate for about $79). The new iPod nanos come in 8GB for about $150, or 16GB for $199 .A new iPod Classic 120GB model, portending the discontinuing of the 160GB variation, is also on the cards.

It doesnt end there. Steve Jobs, the co-founder, CEO of Apple inc. also announced an update to the iTunes Store to version 8, which has a “genius” mode to suggest similar music tracks based upon what a listener has on their playlist.

Also, there is happy news for existing users. Finally, iPhone and iPod Touch users can upgrade to OSX2.1 for free, if they have already updated from 2.0. Those below that will have to pay the additional $10 fee. It fixes a lot of bugs including call drops, battery life, and app crashes.

The 8GB Nanos are available now, with the 16GB models due out this weekend.

It seems that Sony has not given up the fight against the iPod when it comes to portable music. Sony has been reviving the Walkman brand name by coming up with some pretty funky and functional MP3 players in the past few years. What does Sony have this time? Along with it also supports all the popular audio and video codecs so that you will be able to maximize your enjoyment, no matter what the source of the file is. The S-Series Walkman players are also the first MP3 players from Sony that feature their very own SensMe Channels function that is able to create channels automatically which are able to adjust with a user’s preferences. This means the SensMe Channels function will analyze a user’s music collection and suggest channels based on each song’s speed, mood and rhythm. Cool, right?

As for the E-series Walkman players, these aim to bring together both high-quality video and audio performance for the perfect device. Following the S-Series’ footsteps, all E-series models are format friendly, supporting the “drag and drop” user interface that allows one to transfer non-DRM files from online music services to Walkman players. In addition, it also supports Windows Media Video (WMV) with DRM, enabling rights-protected movies and video clips from other media collections.Thats one hell of a performance.

Last but not least would be the B-Series Walkman players that goes easy on your pockets without compromising on audio quality. It boasts open support for Windows Media Audio (WMA) and MP3 codecs enables users to buy, copy and manage music to fit their needs. It also features an illuminator that pulses in time with the music whenever the bass button is pressed, while an integrated FM radio ensures you get to catch up on what the local DJs are blabbering about once you’ve run dry of stored music.

Prices are expected to be from $45 to $180, depending on the model selected along with the storage capacity.

Rolly audio entertainment player

You don't have to be the only one dancing to your favorite tunes -- your audio player can dance for you too.
Rolly, a unique "audio entertainment player" from Sony, is capable of twisting and turning while playing music. The player is egg-shaped and can fit into a hand.

It has speakers on each end that are normally hidden by dish-like covers, but the covers move to reveal the speakers and reflect their sound when the Rolly is switched on.

There's just one button on the player -- an on/off switch -- with the other functions being controlled by a pair of rings that circle its body.

One ring is used to move from track to track or album to album while the other controls the volume. The same two rings are connected to motors that enable the Rolly to scoot around a table-top in time to the music being played. Alternatively it can be set to sit motionless. In that case it's possible to control the Rolly by moving it back and forth to switch tracks, or in a circular motion to increase or decrease the volume.

Rolly has 1GB of flash memory built-in and can playback MP3, Atrac, or AAC songs (AAC songs with copy protection from iTunes Music Store aren't supported). In addition to playing back music from its internal memory the Rolly can also receive music streamed via a Bluetooth connection.



Rolly will accept streams from software and devices capable of Bluetooth streaming, the company said.

Rolly's movements need to be preprogrammed into the device for each track. There are six that are possible. The dish-like speaker covers can flap in and out, the ends of the device to which the speaker covers are attached can twist around and the wheels can turn. With just these six motions is possible to program a surprisingly complicated sequence of moves.

Sony will supply a software application called "Motion Editor" for move-by-move choreography or a rough set of moves can be automatically generated. The latter won't necessarily match in detail the music being played but it's a much quicker way of setting the Rolly in motion that programming by hand.

Users should get about five hours of audio playback from Rolly. This drops to four hours when the device is in motion and three and a half hours when Bluetooth streaming is also enabled.

The Rolly isn't an iPod-killer nor is it meant to be. At a relatively heavy 300 grams and measuring 104 millimeters long and 65 millimeters in circumference the player is not very practical for those wanting a portable audio player. But it is certainly unique and likely to be a talking point whenever people see it.
